Introduction of Department:
The Postgraduate department of Samhita and Maulik Siddhant (Basic Principles & Samhita) was started in 1980-81. The department is primarily related with the fundamental study of Ayurveda named as Samhitas (classical texts) mainly Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtang Sangraha, Ashtanga Hridaya etc as well as all the principles included therein directly or indirectly related with the clinical part, which include Ayurveda History, Darshan (Principles of Indian philosophies related to health) & Sanskrit also. Department imparts education to the under-graduate and postgraduate levels including Ph.D.
Aims & Objectives
o To impart fundamental education to the students of under-graduate & post-graduate classes.
o Teaching by the advanced & interesting means to make the subject and knowledge up to date on scientific parameters.
o To produce quality teachers in the field of basic principles so that Ayurveda could be propagated nationwide & then worldwide.
o To impart not only literary but also clinical teaching based on the fundamental doctrines.
Academic activities:-
Graduate level: Theory & practical classes of Samhitas are conducted in a simpler and convincing way. Class tests are held at frequent intervals to make the students keen & more attentive. Blackboard teaching, PPT presentations, discussions, problem based learning, open book tests, debates etc tools are used as a part of routine teaching methodology.
Post–Graduate level & Ph.D. level: Dept. imparts teaching, training & practical guidance of classical texts of Ayurveda samhita’s to PG and PhD students. Emphasis is given on clinical application of fundamental principles as well as on various ways of research methodology, their application and utility in Ayurveda. On the other hand, PG students of the Dept. are trained in proper learning, pronunciation, translation, explanation & expoundation of basic texts as well as their various commentaries. Weekly seminars by the students of the Dept. with their active participation and presentations regarding their research works, are conducted in the the dept. Eminent persons are called through online and offline webinars for providing updated knowledge and research activities being carried out throughout the country in the field of Samhita. Students are encouraged to participate in different National & International Webinars to develop the presentation and communication skills.

Clinical work and hospital duty by the Department:
Clinical services are rendered to Indoor and Outdoor patients visiting NIA Hospital and S.S. Bombaywala Hospital Kishanpole bazar Jaipur. In NIA hospital a general opd in room no. 21 and a special OPD on Madhumeha is run in room no.7 for 3 days/week in which the patients are diagnosed and treated on the basis of classical texts and special emphasis is given on correction of diet and lifestyle. The faculty members and students offer their services in various medical camps being organized in SC/ST and other areas. In addition to this the faculties and students offer their services as per contemporary need like Covid screening, post Covid care OPD, NIA Covid Helpline and AYUSH helpline as and when required as per the directions of authorities.
